5 Strategies to Unlock Unforeseen Opportunities

Over the course of my career, I’ve found that some of the most rewarding experiences have come from unlikely places. These weren’t part of my official roles or responsibilities, nor were they outlined in any job description. Instead, these were opportunities I stumbled upon by simply being at the right place at the right time, instances of pure serendipity.

Whether it was leading a crucial project, initiating a transformative conversation, or developing an unexpected skill, these instances came unannounced and provided immense value, both personally and professionally. I began to call these instances “opportunities of serendipity,” and I realised their powerful potential to enhance our lives and careers.

But how does one encourage these moments of serendipity? I’ve found that it’s all about increasing your ‘surface area’ for such opportunities. The larger your surface area, the more likely you are to encounter and seize these unpredictable, yet invaluable moments. Here are five strategies that I’ve found useful in expanding my own surface of serendipity.
